How to Boost Efficiency and Digitalize The Production of Composite Parts
Learn how an aerospace company validated the benefits of digitizing a well-established manufacturing process with sensor-based and data-driven technology
Intro
The composites industry must produce high-quality, functional parts using complex, cascaded processes that are often difficult to predict or control, and which can obscure the interrelationships between process parameters, material behavior, and final part performance. Higher levels of process monitoring are required to avoid part rejection during quality assurance testing. An aerospace company validated the benefits of digitizing a well-established manufacturing process with sensor-based and data-driven technology.

What you will learn in this webinar:
- Aircraft manufacturing case: digitalization of vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), coupled with post-mold autoclave curing of fuselage support produced in carbon fibre – RTM6-1.
- Gathering data with sensXPERT in-mold sensors, creating kinetic models, forecasting process cycles, and predicting composites part conversion in real-time during manufacturing cycles.
- Benefits of digitalization and Industry 4.0 in aircraft manufacturing.
Our speakers
Dr. Phil Gralla
Dr. Phil Gralla joined the data science team at NETZSCH Process Intelligence GmbH in 2022. He studied Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics at the University of Bremen and Clemson (US). In 2023, Dr. Gralla completed his doctorate in mathematics. During his time as a research fellow at the University of Bremen, Dr.Gralla worked on various industry projects and conducted research on process control and optimization. Since 2019, he has been developing algorithms as a data scientist; initially for image processing and now for the sensXPERT Digital Mold and Pipe solution.
Dr. John Puentes
Dr. John Puentes joined the sensXPERT team in December 2021 as an Applications Specialist. He supported the establishment of an Application & Services team under the supervision of Dr. Alexander Chaloupka. Dr. Puentes holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he researched the mechanical development of thermosets during curing. With his experience in CNC, polymer and composites manufacturing, material characterization, FEA, additive manufacturing, and semiconductors, he brings a wealth of knowledge to sensXPERT. Recently, he transitioned into the Data Science team. Leveraging his background in material science characterization and modeling, he hopes to contribute to the development of the machine learning algorithms that power our solutions.
